Cutting Fire Wood ~ New Wood Stove ~ Gifts Arrived & More

Big mix today on the off grid homestead. We are using food from our own garden, cutting fire wood for winter, got a new wood stove and much more.

I spent the first half of the day cutting fire wood. A neighbor got two dump truck loads of full logs and asked me to cut them. For my trouble I get some fire wood as well.

This is helpful because we need some cured hardwood to keep us warm this winter. All we have here is 18 acres of pine wood.

We loaded up his truck to bring some wood over when I was finished for the day.

I am feeling a bit ill today yet from the wasp sting I received last Saturday. It comes and goes and I have some good days and bad. This was a bad day.

I have no ill effects from the two yellow jacket stings I got the other day though. I had immediately taken a benadryl and then covered the wounds in baking soda and water. Then I chewed up a wild plantain leaf and put that onto the wounds for a while. Both the baking soda and plantain should pull out the venom.

They seem to have worked because the next day I did not feel anything at all from the stings.

I cut the fire wood to 8 inch lengths because we just got a small pot belly wood stove for $20. This is just like the one I had in NY in my old camper when I first went off the grid. It looks exactly the same except it does not have the water jacket around it.

One of the top plates was broken so I gave that to a friend to weld for me. We hope to use this smaller stove this winter for heating the tiny house. The larger stove I got earlier is just way too big for the tiny home. It was designed for 2,400 square feet or larger.

After bringing it home and measuring it out, I realized that it would take up the entire living area of the tiny house with proper clearances on all sides. This is just not acceptable.

The tiny potbelly stove is perfect for the job though.

We are eating from our garden more and more. We are still getting peas, zucchini, and tomatoes. We also have potatoes and onions in the ground that we use as needed.

The chili peppers are growing again after recovering from the freezing August nights.

My neighbor came over and knocked down the wasp nest hanging by the trailer front door. Then he sprayed it with wasp killer.

After that he helped me expose the yellow jacket nest in the crawl space of the trailer and we sprayed that as well. But it does not seem to have stopped them yet.

The wild kittens came over to the door of the tiny house for some food. These are quite wild and we cannot get close to them. But they come to eat at night when we put food out for them. I hope they will stay around and eat the rodents that infest the place.

We got some gifts in the mail for our baby girl. Thank you everyone who sent us packages.

Later in the evening I had a little bonfire and burnt the wasp nest that was on the trailer. There were still some larvae alive in there and I cannot risk my life or that of my family.
