Saving What We Can From Our Homestead Garden

We got our first tomato harvest from our garden. We are trying to save what we can from the cold, freezing nights so that we can have some sort of harvest from our labors.

We have had a very unusual and cold summer with many freezing nights all the way through. The cold killed most of our garden already in August. Since then we have been covering the plants when the weather forecast is for 42 degrees or lower. We know that we now get about 10 degrees colder at night than in town.

I am digging out some of the chili plants that are still holding on to life. I am putting them into pots in order to save them. We hope to still get some little bit of produce from our work all year.

Melanie made an awesome mincemeat pie from our homestead garden harvest. We are picking up all the green tomatoes that drop off the plants as the cold kills them off. We are making our own salsa and pie fillings with them.

I am hoping that I can keep the tomato plants growing though for a while because they are still alive. Some of the plants are still producing fruit and flowering. Others are no longer flowering but the tomatoes are still growing.
