Awesome Solar Gain In Greenhouse & Prepping For Aquaponics

While everything is dying outside from the cold, I have flowers blooming in the off grid greenhouse. It was 84 degrees in the greenhouse today from the heat of the sun. I am working on an aquaponics system in our greenhouse.

It was turning into a beautiful and sunny day with clear blue sky and shining sun. But it never got out of the 50s outside today.

In the greenhouse the thermometer read 40 degrees but I was sweating with my sweatshirt on. This could not be correct because I could literally feel the temperature difference between the two.

I took out another thermometer for comparison. Just minutes after taking it out from the house, the reading was rising more and more. It was certainly much warmer in the greenhouse than outside.

I want to set up an aquaponics system in the off grid greenhouse for three reasons. One, to keep fish for us to eat through the year. Two we can grow vegetables in the grow beds. And the other reason is that the water will be a thermal mass to resist temperature changes in the greenhouse.

But first I have to finish sealing off the back and side walls of the greenhouse.

I finished cutting the metal sheet for the last piece in the side wall of the off grid greenhouse. I nailed it in place with the help of Chris holding it for me.

Then I finished nailing all the metal sheets to the wall studs. I put extra nails down on the bottom lip of the sheeting to prevent mice and insects getting into the insulation in the walls. Mice love pink fiberglass insulation.

While I worked I was literally sweating in the greenhouse just from the energy of the sun radiating through the windows.
