The body of former Premier League footballer Christian Atsu was returned to his home country of Ghana this week. Atsu was found dead 12 days after devastating earthquakes struck Turkey.
Footage posted by the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana shows armed forces at Kotoka International Airport in Accra carrying a coffin draped in the national flag.
Atsu, who played for Ghana’s national football team between 2012 and 2019, and for Premier League sides Newcastle and Everton, was signed to Turkish club Hatayspor, based in Antakya, when the quakes hit. Ghana Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia said the country was a “nation in grief” following the confirmation of Atsu’s death.
