Bollywood has its own Star Wars? Join the Salty Nerds as we discuss our latest venture into International Film
Brahmastra, a 2019 Indian film directed by Ayan Mukerji, is the totally original story of Shiva, a young man who discovers he has magical powers and is destined to save the world from an ancient evil force. Wow, we've definitely never heard that one before! Along with his love interest, Isha, and a group of allies, Shiva sets out on a perilous adventure to find the three pieces of the Brahmastra, because of course, the fate of the world depends a young poor boy to stop a powerful weapon.
In a plot that's the classic "Heros Journey" like Star Wars, Brahmastra's hero, Shiva, follows in the footsteps of Luke Skywalker, as a young and untrained hero who must go on a quest to save the world from the forces of evil. But instead of finding the Death Star plans, he's looking for the Brahmastra. And just like in Star Wars, there's a strong-willed heroine, Isha, who plays an important role in the adventure. There also may be an evil version of Princess Leia, but that remains to be seen.
And of course, because no epic adventure is complete without a mentor figure, Brahmastra has one too, who helps guide Shiva on his quest. Because who doesn't love another wise old mentor after Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn?
