בינואר בלבד נתפסו בגבולות ארה"ב כמויות פנטניל המספיקות כדי להרוג כמעט 10 מיליון בני אדם. רוב הפנטניל ומרכיביו מקורם בסין. כעת ועדה בסנאט האמריקני פתחה בחקירה בנוגע לסחורות סיניות הנכנסות לארה"ב - סמים לא חוקיים ופריטים שמיוצרים באמצעות עובדי כפייה.
במהלך הדיון אמר הסנטור רון ויידן: "אתם משלמים משכורת רעב, אתם מזהמים מבלי לתת חשבון. חברות סיניות יכולות להציף את השווקים בארה"ב בסחורות זולות ולעקוף כל תחרות".
