I remember when I was a little boy being taught, "Be careful of what you are hearing..", and "Believe half of what you see and not all of what you hear."

These sounded like good advice then, and to most, it still holds the line right along with, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." The problem is that these aren't necessarily true proverbs which paint the whole picture of what's really being said or done.
