Mr. Ducháček is a rather peculiar patron, he is absolutely irreplaceable as a paralegal in Dr. Faulkner's law office. Especially at the moment when Faulkner falls in love with the lovely Julia, the daughter of Elizabeth von Rispaldice. No one but him knows that the spendthrift family, whose financial affairs are managed by the office, no longer has any money and that the doctor, out of love for Julia, finances it from his own. The situation escalates when the lawyer proposes to the girl. She, although she also loves him and confesses her love to him, refuses to please her haughty mother, for whom the young man is not the right match. Although Faulkner himself finds himself bankrupt because of his financial support to the Rispaldis, he forces Ducháček to raise twenty-five thousand to pay off the promissory note fraudulently signed by Julia's brother. The assistant provides the money, but immediately leaves for the castle, where he acquaints the family without napkins with the true state of their finances and begins to organize an auction of the family's property to cover the debts.
