Exploring : A Journey through the Sikh Temple (Gurdwara)
A Gurudwara is a place of worship and community gathering for Sikhs, the followers of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion founded in the 15th century in the Punjab region of India.
The word "Gurudwara" literally means "the doorway to the Guru" and refers to the Sikh scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib, which is considered the living Guru by Sikhs.
At the Gurudwara, worshippers remove their shoes, cover their heads with a scarf or turban, and wash their hands before entering the Darbar Sahib to offer prayers and listen to the hymns and teachings from the Guru Granth Sahib. Food is also an integral part of the Gurudwara experience, and community kitchens, called langars, offer free vegetarian meals to all visitors, regardless of their faith or background.
