20230216-Kids Make You Think...About China and Spying

One thing that children make you do is think. They ask very probing questions like,

"Daddy, what about those balloons they were shooting down?"

"Daddy, if the Chinese are spying on us, are we spying on them?"

These conversations get a little delicate given (1) my complete and utter contempt for our present governments (federal and provincial) and (2) my kids are young. While I want them to have a healthy caution about government, I don't want to scare them. Too much.

So, I gave them the child's version of "Maybe, we should be, but given our racist idiot prime minister's love of China's basic dictatorship, our government probably spends more time spying on us than any foreign nation.

Here I give the more grown up answer.
