How Light Can You Go?
Xfce is about as lightweight as it gets in a full-featured desktop environment. It does have all of the key aspects, from a panel to a window manager, to a desktop manager, to a file manager, to a settings manager, to a session manager. There is also an application finder. It is designed to be as lightweight, fast, visually appealing, and user friendly as possible. It is a modular, totally FOSS desktop environment. It is also stable, easy to use option.
I have used it in the past, but do not enjoy it any longer. The last time I used it was probably 2018 or so, as a part of Ubuntu Studio. I appreciated it in that context, as it stayed out of the way of my early attempts at content creation. However, as time went on, I learned that KDE had gotten lighter, and I really appreciated the extra flexibility and default visual appeal it has, so I switched.

Have You Heard of LXQt?
LXQt used to be LXDE which was lighter weight, as it was based on an earlier version of GNOME (version 2.0), however the GNOME team ceased to support that version, so they had to move on. So they developed LXQt, built around Qt to create a lightweight, modular, classic-look desktop that “won’t get in your way”. I looked at it briefly last year and couldn’t stand it. It felt dated, clunky, very late 90’s in its aesthetic. I know there are those who love it and swear by it, but I ain’t one of them. Give it a try if you want to, or need to because you are running a very old, or an otherwise extremely limited machine. I don’t judge. Do what works for you, try it out. See what you like, what you don’t. If you are nostalgic for the halcyon days of WIndoesnt 98, you will LOVE the environment of LXQt.

Shall We Budge-ie Along?

Ever heard of Budgie? It is an independent desktop environment that has been championed by the team over at Solus Linux, but there are Budgie flavors for most of the major distributions. It is semi-unique, with a bottom bar, like windoesnt, but not purely. I talked about the new release when it came out a couple of weeks back, and I’ve played with it a bit, but didn’t like what felt like a one size-fits-all approach. I treasure the ability to tweak things and make adjustments as I see fit, even if that doesn’t happen frequently. Budgie is its own thing, and I respect that. It is clean and tidy, doesn’t go off the beaten path, but I am just not a fan, personally. As with everything else, though, you look into it and make your own choices as to what feels right and works for YOU, and don’t let some random guy on Rumble tell you otherwise. Enjoy exploring the plethora of options inherent to the FOSS world. Don’t settle if something doesn’t work for you. Keep looking, and you’ll find the setup that is uniquely YOU. That is what I see is part of the point in Linux specifically, and FOSS in general. Choice and variety that have been kept from most of us for the last 40 years. Geek out. But not so much that you lose sight of what really matters (and it ain’t computers or technology).
