We cannot believe that this aqueduct used to carry boats up the Delaware and Hudson Canal! And now we get to experience it by either walking or driving over it. It even was designed to break up the ice flows in the winter that would come hit the pile ons. In this video, we’ll take you on a journey to the D&H aqueduct tow path, a historic and scenic trail that follows the route of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. You’ll learn how this canal was built in the 19th century to transport coal from Pennsylvania to New York, and how it used four aqueducts, or bridges that carried water and canal boats over rivers and streams. You’ll also see the Delaware Aqueduct, the oldest suspension bridge in the United States, designed by John Roebling, who later built the Brooklyn Bridge. The D&H aqueduct tow path is a great place for hiking, biking, birdwatching, and learning about the history and culture of the region. Join us as we explore this amazing engineering marvel and natural beauty!
