Pantaleon was a doctor from Nicomedia (eastern Roman Empire) who lived in the late 3rd century AD. His skill was such that Galerius appointed him to be his personal physician. During this time Pantaleon converted to Christianity. Galerius served as "Caesar" under the Emperor Diocletian, and later succeeded him as emperor. Diocletian was persuaded by Galerius to begin a campaign of persecution against Christians, which Galerius continued when he became Emperor. When it was found out that Pantaleon was a Christian, he was tortured in a number of ways to pressure him into giving up his faith.
