The Inca site of Machu Picchu in Peru reopens to the public

The Inca sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru reopened today. The site, declared a cultural and natural heritage of humanity by Unesco in 1983, was closed on 21 January following demonstrations against the removal of Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, during which the tracks of the railway link from Ollantaytambo to the archaeological park. The decision to resume hosting visitors in the citadel overlooking the Urubamba river valley, reads a statement, "was taken in agreement with all the interested parties, who have made a joint commitment to ensure the safety of the monument and of transport services".
