A devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, collapsing bridges and thousands of buildings. On February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern Turkey near the northern Syrian border. A magnitude 6.7 aftershock struck 11 minutes after the tremor. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was caused by horizontal displacement. This event ruptured either the near-vertical left fault or the right fault hitting the northeast-southwest. The original location of the quake is near the junction of three plates: Anatolia, Arabia, and Africa. Mechanism and location of seismic points occurring in the East Anatolian Fault Zone or the Dead Sea Metamorphic Fault Zone. The East Anatolian Fault promotes western extrusion of Turkey into the Aegean Sea, and the Dead Sea Transformation responds to the northward movement of the Arabian Peninsula relative to the African and Eurasian plates.
