Justice Minister David Lametti holds a news conference on Parliament Hill to discuss his new bill, David and Joyce Milgaard’s Law, which proposes to establish an independent commission to review miscarriages of justice applications. Bill C-40 is named after David Milgaard and his mother Joyce. David was wrongfully convicted for the 1969 rape and murder of nursing student Gail Miller. He was sentenced to life and spent 23 years in prison before being released in 1992. Milgaard was exonerated in 1997. He died at the age of 69 in 2022. Minister Lametti is joined at the news conference by Susan Milgaard, David's sister, and James Lockyer, lawyer and co-founder of Innocence Canada. (February 16, 2023)
