THE PURPOSE OF UNDERSTANDING BIBLICAL HISTORY

Fifth-grade history class, yuck! Civics 101 who needs it? After all, history is made up of a lot of dead people that no one cares about anymore. I just want out of this classroom so I can go play baseball with you guys.
Fifth grade, Sunday, school, and Bible class. Oh no, not another history lesson in the Bible. Didn't I learn about that last year? Here we go again. I've memorized the books of the Bible; the 12 disciples add the shortest verse in the Bible. What more is there?
Well, there you go; that's the general attitude that many people have about the history of our natural world and also the history of our biblical world. Who needs it?
The truth is you, and I need it. Why? Because if we don't know our history, we are doomed to repeat history. And most, especially if we don't know our history, we don't appreciate the sacrifice of the generations before us who made it possible for us to live the life we have and the freedoms we enjoy.
Now, concerning biblical history, we build our faith on that. There is no such thing as blind faith. We build our faith on our interaction with God and the spiritual world through the word of God, which is recorded in the Bible, and the personal experience we have with him during our relationship.
There's a reason why Paul told Timothy to study to show himself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The only truth that we can act upon and be obedient to is that truth revealed to us by the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures and our personal experience with God.
The purpose of understanding our biblical history is to have it as our foundation in our ongoing development in the kingdom of God and the place we have been called to.
So break out the book again, the Bible, and study your history; your life depends upon it.
