# 내용 참고: ‘Dunning-Kruger effect’. www.britannica.com. 사람의 주관적 능력과 객관적 능력 사이에서 나타나는 주관적 허세 (자뻑)를 연구했다. 연구 결과, 몇 환경에서는 능력이 낮은 사람들이 자신의 능력에 대해 지나치게 긍정적으로 평가하는 경향이 있음을 밝혔다. 무능력도 무능력이거니와, 자신의 무능력을 인식하는 반성 능력 (메타인지 능력, Metacognitive)도 부족해서 벌어진 일이다. 주관적 능력도 부족하고 반성도 하지 않는 이 상태를 “곱배기 무능력” 혹은 “무능의 이중부담”(double-burden of incompetence)이라 한다. 여러 환경의 결과이지만 특히, 사회관계도 별로 없이 주어진 제도, 권위 있는 자의 말만 복종하면 이런 정신상태가 생겨난다. 이 정신상태는 이른바, 하버드, 프린스턴 같은 명문대 학생들과 한국/일본 같은 학벌 기반 기업 조직사회에 적용할 수 있다. 더닝과 크루거는 질적으로 파악, 설명할 수 있는 이런 사회 심리현상을 지나치게 실험과학 방법으로 접근하다가 결국, 부실한 이론으로 비판받았다. 그러나, 이 현상은 엄연한 사회적 사실이기 때문에, 접근방법이 과학적으로 부실하다는 비판으로 쉽게 무시될 논제는 아니다.
