Simmiland Gameplay - Classic mode - There's a ton of food but people die anyway?

Summary:
I managed to have a longer lasting civilization probably due to the additional cards I have purchased. Found some new innovations but I ended up with extra inspect cards as there wasn't anything left to inspect. I am probably missing some other combinations of zones like snow biome that I will try out next time. Another strange thing is why are people dying when I see wheat and chickens in abundance?
