RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT COALITION (RGC) TO HOST CRIME SHOULDN’T PAY IN SA PRESS CONFERENCE AGAINST THE SO-CALLED “JUSTICE” POLICY RATIFICATION BY COSA COUNCIL
(San Antonio, Texas) Wednesday, February 15, 2023 – The Responsible Government Coalition (RGC), a coalition of organizations formed in 2012 to hold COSA accountable for fundamentally transforming San Antonio, will be hosting a Crime Shouldn’t Pay In SA Press Conference at the San Antonio City Council Chamber steps, on February 15th at 4 pm.
The Press Conference will include participation by a number of Christian and secular organizations to educate and request that San Antonio City Council needs to act to uphold State law and carry out its duty by refraining from putting the multi-layered “Justice Policy” on the city’s May 2023 municipal election ballot.
San Antonio Family Association’s spokesman, Patrick Von Dohlen, said, “It is clear that the “SA Justice Policy” violates Texas Laws including the state’s Local Governance Code based on the fact that it is not a single-issue idea as it attempts to decriminalize abortion, marijuana, and theft contrary to state law and creates a new city “Justice Director” position. The Council needs to comply with state law and the city’s own Charter to avoid the controversial scandal of ratifying the “Justice Policy” as an eligible Charter Amendment on the May 2023 ballot and avoid future litigation that will cost lots of money at the expense of taxpayers.”
City Clerk Debbie Racca-Sittre certified that ACT4SA has collected enough petition signatures to satisfy the city’s Charter requirement for the one issue to be placed on the ballot. City Attorney Andy Segovia has certified that ACT4SA’s so-called “Justice Policy” Charter Amendment can be placed on the May 2023 Ballot. Yet, Mr. Segovia disguised his approval of Act4SA’s agenda by telling reporters that “most of the provisions are inconsistent with state law and could not be enforced” should the ballot initiative be approved.
Is Mr. Segovia providing legal advice for the City or to cover for the Mayor and Council?
In a recent speech by Councilman John Courage regarding the proposed charter amendment, he stated that he could not speak for or against the charter amendment “on advice of council” by Mr. Segovia. This is a lack of real courage on the part of the Councilman to represent the people who elected him versus acting like a city employee beholden to the City Attorney. On what grounds can Council members not comment on a Charter Amendment that would drastically alter law enforcement, and fundamentally transform our city into a mirror image of lawless Portland, Oregon?
Citizens have every right to expect their elected Council members to state their position clearly and work vigorously for or against ACT4SA and its radical, leftist agenda. As City Attorney, Mr. Segovia has a duty to advise the City Council on matters of law. Indeed, he has publicly stated that with the exception of one provision calling for the creation of a city “justice director”, the Charter provisions “are all inconsistent with state law.”
Residents of San Antonio deserve the Council’s responsible representation and compliance with State Law where it derives its authority from, and We The People reserve the right to seek judicial relief to compel the City Council to do the right thing and fulfill its duties to its citizens and carry out its responsibilities to the Great State of Texas.
Speakers will include: David Moore of Unite San Antonio, George Rodriguez of El Conservador, Pastor Charles Flowers of SA Black White & Brown, James Murphy, JD, Weston Martinez of Texas Freedom PAC, Amanda Vieira, and Patrick Von Dohlen of the San Antonio Family Association.
