According to a recent analysis by the World Bank, nine out of the world's ten most air-polluted cities are in South Asia, with Delhi and nearby cities no longer being the filthiest due to the pollution now spreading.

This has led to a health and economic catastrophe, with air pollution causing over two million deaths each year in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Despite efforts by governments to mitigate this problem, such as India's National Clean Air Programme, only 38 of the targeted 131 cities are on track to improve air quality, and pollution has even increased in some, such as Mumbai and Bangalore.
