A Short Story-Recounting Of A Dream
I had about being on the Moon.
-
My father had been dead for at least 10 years. I really got along well with my Dad.
He would say of himself. “I am a Bibliomaniac.” He had, according to him, about 7,000 volumes of books in every free space, under any roof, on 15 acres.
-
My last memory of him, as he lay dying in a hospital in Seattle Washington in December of 1999.
-
We were discussing some memories together when he suddenly said. “I’ve got to go close the gate.” The gate he was referring to was the gate down at the end of the driveway on our old farm in Kansas. He had a habit of opening the gate in the morning and closing the gate every evening.
We were easily two thousand miles away, but that didn’t matter. He went home to rummage through his books. To him, that was heaven.

He leaned back and gently went to sleep. He never regained consciousness. He would live but 10 more days.

So, as I was dreaming, I was walking on a a small trail on the Moon. I found a bench to sit on.
-
As I was resting for a moment. Who would come upon me but my Father, with his little mutt of a dog, Missy.
He sat down for a moment and we restarted our conversation about the memories we had of our time together.
-
Who next to come down the trail was Barack Obama. In real life I couldn’t even stand to listen to his voice. His voice grated on me grievously.
-
I stood to talk to him and when I did, I looked to see my Dad waddling away from me with his little dog, Missy in tow.
-
I found it unusual that I didn’t need a space suit or any additional oxygen.
The dream ended as it had started, abruptly.
