Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star located about 550 light-years away from Earth. It is the 10th brightest star in the night sky. In 2019 the star's brightness was dimming, and some speculated the star might go supernova. This was not the case though. Either dust or starspots are responsible for the dimming. Betelguese is not expected to go supernova for another 100,000 years.
