Derailed Train Causes Chaos in Ohio

A Norfolk Southern Railway train transporting hazardous materials from Illinois to Pennsylvania derailed unexpectedly in East Palestine, Ohio, between Akron and Pittsburgh. Sparks from the derailment caused a fire to occur onboard the train in multiple cars. Not only was the danger of a possible explosion present, but also the burning chemicals present in some of the cars were releasing highly toxic hydrogen chloride and phosgene gas into the atmosphere.
