Bill is depicted as one of the most isolated and self reliant characters, he is someone that was only concerned with his own survival, but his backstory meeting Frank allows him to see that protecting the ones you love is something to die for. The end of his story leaves our protagonist with the ability to continue with the mission of protecting Ellie, and hopefully saving humanity. They are left with a truck, battery, weapons, ammunition, and food. This is a world where nothing is for free, and the note that Bill leaves for Joel spurs Joel on to keep his word to Tess and keep Ellie safe.

its a really good way to set the tone of the series without killing off any main characters tbh, i think it's better they did it this way for newer fans

I think the episode was theme heavy. Sure. It did not move the plot much, but the theme of the story is human connection, mostly between Joel and Ellie like in the game. Zombies’ apocalypse stories are most of the time not about the zombies. I can understand the desire for more action pack moment, but I think it will matter to understand Joel’s journey.
