Ape Escape, released for thePlayStation in 1999, incorporates ape-related humour, unique gameplay, and a wide variety of pop culture references. The first game in the series is the first game to have made the DualShock or Dual Analog controller mandatory.

A white-haired monkey named Specter obtains a helmet known as the Peak Point Helmet, which boosts his intelligence. After equipping an army of monkeys with similar helmets, and using an enhanced helmet for himself, Specter sends his monkey army to take over the world. The protagonist, equipped by a "professor," with various gadgets, must capture the monkeys and restore order to the world.

The Ape Escape series is notable for its radical departure from the tried-and-true control method in many other games. It was the first PlayStation game to require the use of a DualShock or Dual Analog controller; the left stick moves the character while the right operates whatever gadget the character has its possession.

The main objective through the majority of the games is to use the available array of gadgets to locate and capture monkeys. When a monkey has been found, it must be caught with the Time Net gadget. monkeys.
The game was a success, going Platinum, entering the Greatest Hits series in the US, and entered the "Best Of" releases in Japan. It was reviewed positively, and was compared to games such as Super Mario 64.

In Super Mario 64, you jump in and out of levels, obtaining stars, to get to the next part of the game. Ape Escape is a little similar, let me explain how it works.

On the first playthrough, players will have a set number of monkeys to catch before progressing towards the next level. Once each level has been completed, they can be reentered with the gadgets necessary to catch the remaining monkeys. You don't have to re-enter levels to complete the main story, like you do with Super Mario 64, but you must capture ALL monkeys to do a secret final boss battle with Specter and receive the true Ape Escape ending.

I played a bit of Ape Escape 2 before with my daughters, so I was expecting this to be fun for a bit, but I massively underestimated this game! Sure, the earlier levels were a bit less smooth, with worse cut-scenes, and controls than Ape Escape 2 on the PS2. But that being said, the later levels, which I expected to be a difficult slog, were actually great. Most of the late levels were a marvel in level design and some really fun boss fights and mechanics were introduced.

It wasnt very fun to control the rowboat or the tank in this game, but the developers kept the gameplay interesting.

There were many highlights in this title. I would say one moment in particular made me realize how excellent this title was. In the later game, the professor and your female partner, Natalie, get kidnapped and you must visit an amusement park to save them. When rescuing the professor, you battle this clown boss on top of a hell-in-the-cell type structure, and the clown has two phases. AFter you defeat the first phase, the ceiling of the cell collapses and you have to battle his second phase while the professor, who was trapped inside, runs around for cover. This section of the game was very fun and well designed, I appreciated how much effort went into it.

Is Ape escape on the level of Metal Gear Solide and Final Fantasy 7? No, it isn't but it is still one of the best PS1 games I've played.
