SMART Goals & How to Achieve Anything

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Timely. there are slight variations such as Attainable and Relevant but the overall message is the same.

If you can master the art of goal setting and achieving, the world is yours. One of the habits successful people have that unsuccessful people often do not is the relentless setting and achieving of long and short term goals. Beyond the SMART there are other extremely important elements that you almost never hear about that we will cover in this video.

So specific - I need to lose weight. Measurable - I need to lose 40 pounds, that measurements could also be waist or hip size. Actionable - do I have the plan and abilities to hit this goal? Yes I have a structured diet plan that I understand and commit to adhere to. Realistic? Do I really believe I can do this? Yes that is realistic I have given myself 6 months which is under 7 pounds a month, and that is the timely part of the equation.

If you were starting a business or a project same thing. But just writing down goals is not enough. We need our subconscious to be programmed as well.

Your mind makes decisions based on attracting pleasure and avoiding pain. Thats all it does it avoids things it doesn't want to do, and approaches things it does want to do. A basic example - your alarm goes off at 6am , you hit the snooze button. 6:10 it goes off you hit the snooze button. 6:20 you know if you do not get up now you will be late for work or school and could get into trouble, or fired. Until that balance for pleasure and pain has been changed in your subconscious, you'll stay in bed all day. So make no mistake your subconscious mind needs to be in agreement with the goals or you just wont do it.

Using our weight loss example again we need the pain of being heavy to outweigh the immediate pleasure of eating the pizza or ice cream. in business we need the pain of being continually broke, to outweigh the pain of all that work setting up a business. We need the pleasure of being wealthy in the future to outweigh the pain of all this hard work today. The vast majority of people can't discipline their minds to sacrifice a small guaranteed pleasure for today for a potential but substantial reward in the future. Our minds are programmed for instant gratification. But successful people calibrate their minds to sacrifice short term fun for long term benefits. Unsuccessful people will keep gaming, or watching TV, and whatever until that switch of pleasure vs pain changes.

Emotionaliztion allows us to program the part of the brain that makes decisions. Your emotions that guide your decisions. If emotions want a cupcake you'll be eating a cupcake. So we need to fight back by emotionalizing our long term goals.

How? Using our weight loss example again we write down every reason we need to lose weight. Able to play sports or play with your kids or impress family and friends.. Think of how much pride you would have after attaining what so few can achieve. Not be out of breath going up stairs, treating yourself to all new set of clothes. Take the time to experience all these feelings of positivity in your mind. Visualize how awesome it will be when you hit that goal, and all the scenarios that would be positive.
Next write down every negative emotion you will experience if you dont make these changes. Cant play sports, out of breath, keep gaining weight, be disappointing in yourself. Potential health issues. Really feel these negative emotions that will be there in 4 months if you did not hit your goal. Feel how terrible that would be.
If you are starting a business think of how great it would be to have the freedom to spend time with family. not have to wake up with an alarm. to have money to go on vacation whenever you like, to buy a nice car, to send your kids to university. And conversely, what will happen if you dont hit that goal. Have to keep going to work, worry about job security, pressure at work and office politics. All the negatives that will be there if you dont change.
If you really took the time to emotionalize your goals, and keep running these emotionalized scenes through your mind, you will have programmed your subconscious to have no choice but to hit the goal.
