St. Catherine of Ricci was born into a patrician family in Florence in 1522. At age 13, she entered a cloistered convent of the Third Order of St. Dominic where she was eventually named Prioress. She experienced the Ecstasy of the Agony of Our Lord every Friday from 12 noon to 4 pm and her suffering was accompanied by the stigmata, which drew many visitors and skeptics. She begged Heaven to cease these phenomena and her prayers were answered after 12 years. She died surrounded by a choir of Angels and was seen ascending to Heaven by St. Madeleine of Pazzi. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira explains that virtue is accessible to all Catholics, heroic virtue requires special graces but is called for by all. He emphasizes that sanctity is the practice of heroic virtue, not just the possession of good habits. Religious life can require heroism equal to that of a hero on the battlefield.
