Nelson Mandela Capture Site Howick Kwazulu Natal

The site where Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside Howick, in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Mandela was dressed in disguise as a driver when the police found him, this arrest led to his 27 year incarceration. On that day, armed security police, acting on a tip off, flagged down a car in which Nelson Mandela was pretending to be the chauffeur. The spot where this occurred is on the R103 the old main road which is just 5km from Howick.

The capture site has an educational centre and museum, and do take the time to take the "long walk to freedom" which takes you to a unique steel sculpture to honour a unique man.

To see the sculpture, visitors walk from the Visitor Centre along a path representing 'the Long Walk to Freedom' towards the sculpture culminating at the viewing point halfway down a cut into the earth where the steel columns gradually come together and focus at a particular point 30m meters from the sculpture. Along the way there are 27 steel signs, 1 for each year of his incarceration, and each one symbolising a milestone of Nelson Mandela's life.

The artist Marco Cianfanelli and the architect Jeremy Rose worked together from 2007 to 2012 to create a unique monument dedicated to the life of Nelson Mandela. Exactly 50 years after Mandela's arrest, on August 5, 2012, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site was inaugurated by then-President Jacob Zuma.

I’m Chris Corbet; video creator, photographer and fan of road trips, outdoor adventures, nature and remote places. I hope my videos might help those who want to experience gravel travel & off road adventures, and who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination. I try to provide useful tips and background information about the unusual places that we visit, as well as endeavouring to draw attention to conservation, my intention is always to inform, educate and entertain.

Remember:
There will never be a second chance to make a great first impression!
