Chicken Coop Zone 2 Permaculture

In today’s episode Douglas is going to explain our chicken coop zone 2 permaculture as we get ready to start laying our hyperadobe earth bags!

We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022, after a lot of prayer and research, we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo, and our newest additions Luna and Ursa!

In permaculture, there are 5 “zones” (well 6 if you count 0 as one) that you design around. Zone 0 is the zone that you visit the most, so this will be your house. As you move from zone 0 to zone 5, the amount of time you frequent each zone gets less and less. So, our chicken coop will fall into zone 2. We will likely visit it daily so that we can feed the chickens, collect eggs, open the coop up in the morning for them, and close it at night so they can keep safe and warm.

Douglas wanted this area to look like it “belonged” and that it had been here for a long time. So, we went down by our wash and found a bunch of native plants to repopulate areas that we had to clear to build. He also found a bunch of downed mesquite tree branches to use as the rustic handrail for the coop entrance as well as for the arch that ushers into the chicken “yard”.

If the weather holds tomorrow, we are going to start laying our hyperadobe bags, so praying for decent weather because we are ready to get this coop built! The baby chicks arrive at the end of March, so we are ready to get this thing done!
