Entrepreneur Motivation that Actually Works
Why does motivation seem to run out? You watch a motivating speech or video, commit to working hard & 20 minutes later you are ripping and playing x-box.
There are only two things your brain does, try to gain pleasure, and avoid pain. I think Freud was the first to put that concept out, and Tony Robbins popularized it in the 90's. So if your alarm goes off in the morning, you will keep hitting the snooze button until the pain of being fired from your job, or missing an appointment, is greater than the pleasure of staying in bed. Most decisions you make, and if you track it, you will see is based on avoiding the greater pain, or going after the greater pleasure.
The problem with most entrepreneur motivation, like videos of the Lambos or mansions is that most people just don't have enough innate desire for these material things to outweigh the pain and the struggle involved in obtaining them. This balance of pleasure and pain always decides the outcome. Until you either associate more pleasure with the work, or with the material goals, nothing will happen. But most people really dont have enough desire, or even believe it is possible, for the Lambovation to work.
Many people deep in their subconscious have an dislike for the extremely wealthy. They love to watch the videos of the supercar drivers who cant park, or crash into brick walls. Most people have this cognitive dissonance, they want to be rich, but they dont really like rich people. We covered cognitive dissonance in the last video link is above..
Point being the potential pleasure of an unlikely Lambo in the future, just doesnt provide sufficient motivation to bring sustained effort in the present. You watch a few vids, get all pumped up, and 10 minutes later you're playing xbox. This is another big problem, that our brains are hardwired to seek immediate gratification, and will in most cases take a small reward in the present over a larger potential reward in the future. A topic for another day.
Many people who find insufficient motivation towards gaining pleasure in lambos or mansions, can find motivation by leveraging pain avoidance. Pain is a massive motivator. Present day society wants to shield everyone from pain, But in this case fear, loss and regret can motivate you long term.
Each small box on a motivation chart represents one month. There are 24 boxes on each line representing 2 years. There are 40 lines altogether. In total this is 80 years broken down into months, which is about the average lifespan today.
Now what you want to do is to subtract the months that have already gone by in your life by shading them out. The shaded areas are time that has passed. The non shaded parts are the months remaining to accomplish any goals be it writing a book, hitting a financial benchmark, travelling, whatever.
When you break down your life into months, you see how little time we actually have. I keep this chart by my desk and whenever I feel myself becoming distracted I look at this terrifying chart. My chart assumes Ill work and live until 80 - if I stop at 65, which I wont, this is the horrifying reality of how few months remain for me to get things done. Now I dont care much about Lambos, but I do care about agonizing regret in the future not having accomplished everything I wanted to do.
Even if you are only 18 years old, here is the chart representing months until you retire. Regardless of your age time is your enemy. And if you let that sink in, the feelings of regret, the sorrow, the pain of living an unfulfilled life after wasting all of those single months, your brain can reprogram that pleasure and pain balance to kick it up a notch.
Many people feel uncomfortable with this chart. But as soon as you identify the part of your brain that feels uncomfortable, that is when you identify the part that needs to be relentlessly changed, and the part that is that is holding you back. Use that fear, that fear of loss, that fear of regret to force you to accomplish. Weight loss, writing a book, starting a business - now is the time.
Truth is most people don't want to be uncomfortable, they'll go back to Lambos and mansions because that makes them feel good. And 20 years from now they'll likely still be looking at images of Lambos, or more likely have given up entirely and have a crusty opinion of the world, and hate rich people even more.
You can make your own chart in MS word, simply pick table from the top menu, choose 24 columns and 40 rows for 80 years, then shade the number of years past by highlighting the contents and shading.
