John D. Rockefeller, or John Davison Rockefeller, was an American industrialist and philanthropist who founded the Standard Oil Company, the first significant business trust in the United States. He was born on July 8, 1839, in Richford, New York, and passed away on May 23, 1937, in Ormond Beach, Florida.

One of the most amazing people to shape the American corporate landscape is Rockefeller. In 1937, Rockefeller's estimated net worth of $1.4 billion represented 1.5% of the US GDP. He was (and still is) the richest person in American business and economic history using this criterion.

Rockefeller donated more than $500 million to a variety of religious, scientific, and educational causes through the Rockefeller Foundation after he retired from his day-to-day activities. He supported many additional charitable initiatives, including the founding of the Rockefeller Institute and the University of Chicago.

Rockefeller established one of the first and most profitable monopolies in the country by collaborating with the railways and undercutting the competition. The monopoly was dismantled by the Supreme Court in 1911, but by that time the enormous Rockefeller fortune had grown.

During his lifetime and after his passing, he attracted both supporters and opponents.
