PUBLIC HEALTH STATEMENT
Vinyl Chloride
CAS#: 75-01-4
July 2006
Some men who work with vinyl chloride have
complained of a lack of sex drive. Studies in
animals showed that long-term exposure can
damage the sperm and testes. Some women who
work with vinyl chloride have reported irregular
menstrual periods. Some have developed high
blood pressure during pregnancy.
Results from several studies have suggested that
breathing air or drinking water containing moderate
levels (100 ppm) of vinyl chloride might increase
their risk for cancer. However, the levels used in
these studies were much higher than levels found in
the ambient air and/or most drinking water supplies.
Studies of workers who have breathed vinyl
chloride over many years showed an increased risk
for cancer of the liver. Brain cancer, lung cancer,
and some cancers of the blood also may be
connected with breathing vinyl chloride over long
periods. Studies of long-term exposure in animals
showed that cancer of the liver and mammary gland
may increase at very low levels of vinyl chloride in
the air (50 ppm). Lab animals fed low levels of
vinyl chloride each day (2 mg/kg/day) during their
lifetime had an increased risk of getting liver
cancer.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services has determined that vinyl chloride is a
known carcinogen. The International Agency for
Research on Cancer has determined that vinyl
chloride is carcinogenic to people, and EPA has
determined that vinyl chloride is a human
carcinogen

CDC Vinyl Chloride
Toxicological profile for
Draft for public comment
January 2023

The most examined endpoints were cancer (approximately 50%), hepatic
(approximately 40%), and neurological (10%). Only five animal studies evaluated toxicity following oral
exposure and these studies examined a limited number of endpoints (death, body weight, hematological,
hepatic, and cancer).

What You Need To Know from an Environmental Lawyer - The Collins Law Firm
Let's talk about vinyl chloride.
How do people get exposed to vinyl chloride?
First of all, you need to know that vinyl chloride often started out as a different chemical, sometimes TCE or PCE, and then in the environment, those chemicals went through a process called degradation, and over time became vinyl chloride. This typically happened near factories or at landfills where TCE or PCE was dumped and allowed to bleed into the soil and degrade into vinyl chloride. The vinyl chloride migrates down into the groundwater and that's where it becomes a problem for human beings. If that groundwater is the source of a family's water supply, for example if the family has a private well, then vinyl chloride is in the water coming out of their kitchen tap and their shower head. If the water has vinyl chloride in it, then the family is being exposed to this dangerous chemical. There is another way that vinyl chloride in groundwater can be a problem. Vinyl chloride is a volatile organic compound, which means that it turns into a vapor, and when it does, the vapor seeps back up through the soil, through tiny foundation cracks and into the air inside homes. It's colorless and odorless so people will not even know they are breathing vinyl chloride.
What are the health effects of vinyl chloride?
Most importantly, you need to know that there is no safe level of vinyl chloride. Every serious scientific organization that I know of that has studied its health effects, has concluded that vinyl chloride is a known carcinogen in human beings. Medical studies show that it causes cancer, principally liver cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer and blood cancers like lymphoma and leukemia. It also disrupts our immune system, especially in children, which makes it very dangerous. The bottom line is: If you suspect or know that there is vinyl chloride in your home or air or water, you need to do everything you can to eliminate this threat to your family.
