Brake failure possible cause of N12 crash : -

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services said the truck was travelling from the N12 west off-ramp to Edenvale when it collided with several vehicles before crashing into a Joburg metro bus.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) stated that it is believed that brake failure resulted in the February 8 crash at the N12 west Edenvale off-ramp at about 17:20.
“An articulated truck was travelling from the N12 west off-ramp to Edenvale when its brakes allegedly failed. It collided with several vehicles before crashing into the City of Joburg metro bus, pushing it across the road,” said Eric Maloka, media liaison for DEMS.

Ekurhuleni DEMS, along with Edenvale and Bedfordview fire and rescue crew responded to the multi-vehicle collision involving the truck, three sedans, a bakkie and a fully loaded City of Joburg metro bus.
Maloka said EMPD assisted in closing the road to allow Gauteng ambulance services with the assistance of private medical services to treat injured patients.

“It was recorded that 53 patients were treated,” Maloka said.
Bedfordview and Edenvale News previously reported that four critically injured patients were airlifted.
“Another two were transported by ambulance and 30 patients with moderate injuries were treated and respectively transported to various hospitals.
“Seventeen patients with minor injuries were also treated and transported. Nine patients refused to be transported with another bus redirected to transport them,” said Maloka.

City of Ekurhuleni MMC of Community Safety Khathutshelo Rasilingwane attended the scene.
“The Department of Energy was summoned to assist with the damaged traffic and street lights that started to spark from the live wires,” said Maloka.
