On February 6, 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake and a series of strong tremors and aftershocks struck southeastern Turkey and northwest Syria, killing at least 22,000 and injuring dozens of thousands. The quake is the strongest to hit Turkey in a century and is believed to have been caused by a fault zone in the region. Rescue efforts are underway, but the damage to buildings will make it difficult for medical relief organizations to provide assistance. World Vision is assisting in search and rescue efforts and is also providing aid to displaced people in the region, using imagery released under the Open Data Program. More than 4,300 people have died and over 15,800 have been injured as a result of this tragedy, leaving many in need of assistance.
