The California grizzly bears were thought to be extinct in 1922, but in 1924, a grizzly bear was spotted briefly. Grizzly bears have never been seen in California since then.

In the 1700s, California saw a rise in its human population, leading to increased demand for land. This resulted in human expansion into animal habitats and the destruction of natural environments, including the cutting down of forests and alteration of waterways. This caused many animals to migrate to safer areas, while others perished.

Grizzly bears, however, refused to abandon their territories and instead confronted human encroachment. This led to an increase in bear attacks on humans and their livestock, causing a rift between the two species. In response, hunters took up arms to protect themselves and their communities, and began killing the bears. By the end of the 1700s, the conflict had escalated into a full-blown war between bears and humans.
