A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday morning, killing at least 13,000 people and injuring thousands more. It was the worst earthquake in Turkey since 1999 and one of the strongest recorded in the region in a century. Casualties are expected to rise as rescuers continue to dig through rubble for survivors.

The initial tremor struck near the south-central Turkish city of Gaziantep at 4:17 a.m. local time. Thousands of buildings across both countries collapsed to the ground.
