Candace first partnered with MDC in December 2018. “Many things drew me to this company, but the thing that made my decision final was my conversation with Josh and Jenna the night before I joined. I saw TRUTH! I saw the NO FLUFF; I saw CONFIDENCE in where they knew their company was going,” says Candace. “As an entrepreneur, it’s so important to partner up with a company that gives truth and honesty, a company that doesn’t sell you on hype… I can tell how genuine they were about wanting to see the masses win.”

Candace cites Madam C.J. Walker as her first inspiration on her path to becoming a successful businesswoman. “She wasn’t just a philanthropist and an entrepreneur; she was the first African-American female to become a self-made millionaire,” says Candace of the cosmetics and haircare brand Walker developed. “She became her own version of a network marketing company. She had women all over the world selling a product to their community that produced a powerful result.”

Fast forward to Candace joining the MDC team and finding even more inspiration from CEOs Josh and Jenna Zwagil to propel her success forward. “I believe that as your story constantly evolves, your inspiration changes,” says Candace. “When you dig deep into the story of Josh and Jenna Zwagil, there are so many similarities of our pasts. Jenna, at one time, sold insurance, worked odds and ends jobs, and knew that being an employee wasn’t something for her. To see her fight, her mission, and where she is today has been an inspiration because I was an Insurance Agent for almost 16 years. It resonated with me—it inspired me!” Candace says. “I’m also so inspired by Josh. To enter entrepreneurship at such a young age, to go from bagging groceries, to knowing college wasn’t for him. Standing his ground and stepping out on faith.” Candace adds, “Inspiration comes in many forms, so on the topic of who inspired me, I can go on for days!”

Over the course of her journey to success, Candace cites the biggest lesson she’s learned is that success or failure is solely up to her. “No one is responsible for my success or my failure,” she says. “If it’s meant to be, it is up to me.” Even if someone didn’t start off on the right foot in life, Candace believes that one’s experiences push you to be the better version of yourself, as illustrated by her favorite motivational phrase, “My past is not my trash—it is my treasure!”

“People assume that because your past is flawed that you can’t elevate in life,” Candace says. “I believe that things happen to you to push you to be the better version of yourself. My past made me realize that it would be ME that would break generational curses and end the war on poverty. It would be ME that would transform my family’s life. Because I had some flaws in my past, society would label me as a failure. But I chose not to wear that label and create a new label for the Life of Candace Byrd Davis.”

Looking back on her path, Candace says if she could give her younger self some advice, it would be: “Go harder! FASTER! Who cares what people think? Who cares what people say? They don’t see what you see—keep going!” And for young entrepreneurs who also want to achieve her level of success? “Be consistent! Be committed! Commit to your WHY, your GOALS, and your VISION! Do not give up!” Candace says. “I don’t care what it looks like or feels like right now. Your FAMILY is depending on YOU to win, so keep going and WIN BIG FOR THEM!”
