Kiev believes that Moscow is preparing for a Russian offensive aimed at militarily recapturing the Kharkiv or Zaporizhzhia regions.
Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) of Ukraine, said on 7 February:
According to the NSDC Secretary, Russian forces are testing Ukraine's defenses in the partially seized Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which serves as a Russian-controlled land bridge between occupied Ukraine's east and Crimea.
He stated that Kyiv "doesn't exclude out" a fresh Russian onslaught in Kharkiv Oblast, where Russian soldiers were forced back last summer by a lightning-fast Ukrainian counteroffensive.
"Attempts at an offensive in either the Kharkiv or Zaporizhzhia front will of course be made. How successful they’ll be will depend on us."
