Why is describing yourself so difficult? You'd think it would be easy, since you spend literally all of your time with yourself. Yet if someone asks us to describe who we are, we struggle to find the words. We all hit a point in our lives where we're forced to dig deep and figure this out. I don't know if we'll ever get to a place where we have the perfect answer, but the older we get, it's like we keep finding pieces to the puzzle, and there's a point when we start to see a picture of what the finished product will look like.

Break Of Dawn was about me facing this exact identity crisis. The imagery of fun late-night hangs with friends in high school painted a picture of how I felt in general about life and my future before the stresses of adulthood. At that time, I knew what I wanted to be, and I had a vision for how to get there.

After I truly gave my life to Christ at eighteen, however, everything changed. My values weren't the same, my goals weren't entirely the same, and everything I thought I wanted in life suddenly disappeared. I had no idea how what my role in the world was anymore. Weirdly enough, I felt down and the future looked bleak. But I soon learned that God was taking time to weed out my own desires, and replace them with His. He also had a vision for my life—a much better one, and He was more interested in changing me than giving me what I wanted.

Years after writing that song, I can say with full confidence that the night has indeed found new life.
