Can I build a 1000-yard competition rifle with a budget of only $500? The Savage Axis fits neatly into the budget, but let's find out how it's built to see what the advantages and disadvantages are.

Advantages:
1. Savage Accuracy
2. Floating Bolt Head
3. Precise Headspace Via Barrel Nut
4. Barrel Quality
5. Rust-Resistant Parkerized Finish
6. Solid Action

Disadvantages:
1. Ambidextrous, Plastic Stock
2. Sporter Barrel Profile
3. Short 22" Barrel
4. Trigger Weight
5. Trigger Creep
6. Trigger Overtravel

I think that we can overcome the disadvantages of the Savage Axis with a little work. A laminate stock will ensure a solid action bedding. My father-in-law and I have a trigger job in mind that will eliminate the creep, reduce the pull weight, and limit the overtravel. Careful cartridge selection can help us overcome the barrel's short length. The only thing we can do to manage the thin barrel's heat build-up is to fire slowly.

This video series is going to follow each step as we turn this Axis into a target rifle, so make sure you subscribe to The Social Regressive so you don't miss any of the action.
