Forget Not His Covenant

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” 2 Peter 3:10-12

The day described here is indeed coming. What manner of persons, therefore, ought we to be as we see this day approaching?

This is Part Six in our series, What Manner of Persons Ought Ye To Be?

Be ye MINDFUL ALWAYS OF HIS COVENANT — ורכז , zakar — remember, make mention, recount
1 Chronicles 16:11-17

God made a covenant with Abraham which extended to Isaac and Jacob and their descendants. He gave unto them the land of Canaan. He led them, He protected them and made many great and wonderful promises to them!

They were told never to forget that covenant. They were to be mindful of it, make mention of it often and recount it to their children and children’s children, to the end that they would never forget, because if they were ever to forget that covenant, or if they were ever to forget that they were the people of God, it would be a stumbling block to them.

But they forgot — we forgot — and it has been a stumbling block to us. But it is easy to find the people of the covenant. All you have to do is follow the migrations of the Israelites from the time of the Assyrian captivity forward, and you will find them.

Herodotus writes of their migration in the twelfth chapter of his fourth book, and he refers to the Israelites as Scythians and Cimmerians, and shows them going beyond the Araxes River, through the narrow passages northward to a distant land that previously had not been inhabited, to the as yet unexplored rivers and river valleys of Europe. This is confirmed in 2 Esdras 13:40-45

The nations of Christendom in the world today are that people, but we have forgotten who we are, and the covenant that God has made with us.

We need strength for the days ahead. We are exhorted to be strong and of a good courage. Toward that end let us all be ever mindful of His covenant, and of His love for us.

Be ye SEPARATE — ἀϕορίζω , aphorizo — to divide off, to limit, to exclude, much like holiness
2 Corinthians 6:14-18, Ezra 10:10-14, 2 Corinthians 7:1, Psalms 1:1-3

Be ye ANGRY and SIN NOT — ὀργίζω , orgidzo — angry, wroth
Ephesians 4:17-27, 1 John 1:5-7

Be ye all of ONE MIND — ὀμόϕρων , homophron — like-minded, harmonious
1 Peter 3:8-9, Acts 2:1-4, Romans 12:16, 1 Corinthians 1:10, Philippians 3:15-16
