Turkey earthquake: Erdogan declares 3-month state of emergency as rescue efforts continue - STARMOON

To aid rescue efforts, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday proclaimed a three-month state of emergency for the country's 10 southern regions that had recently experienced deadly earthquakes.

The action was taken as rescue workers raced against time to extricate people from the wreckage of fallen buildings. The death toll from Monday's two powerful earthquakes, which struck a large region of Turkey and Syria, approached 5,000. When a state of emergency is declared, the president and cabinet have the authority to establish new laws without the legislature's consent and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms as they see fit.

In his second speech, since the first earthquake struck, Erdogan declared, "We have decided to proclaim a state of emergency to guarantee that activities are carried out quickly. Erdogan said that 70 nations had offered assistance with search and rescue efforts and that Turkey intended to open hotels in the nearby tourist destination of Antalya so that anyone affected by the earthquakes may stay there over the winter.

The snow-covered city of Malatya's earthquake victims described their grievances after saying the government abandoned them. Says Ahmet Alinak "We are all doomed because no one is present. We reside in Turkey, thus this is the order that applies to us. We didn't anticipate the state to act in this manner."
