Kayak Early Ice Out 2020

Kayak early ice out was made on 4/2/2020 in Sturgeon Bay by Sherwood Point, I wanted to get out as a friend of mine and myself always wondered if early after ice out that the whitefish would still be in. I can tell you that answer is no, I went directly to where one week earlier I was catching whitefish, I only picked up one fish on my Humminbird 597 ci in a two hour period. The water temperature was between 30 and 31 degrees, so I do not believe it was a water temperature issue as to why they went to deeper water. I now believe that when the ice was gone the whitefish went deeper because of the sun/light penetrating the water depths so much easier. This was a great day even without catching anything the water was so calm, I could hear every time the current changed and the thin ice was being broken by the larger pieces. I would have stayed out longer but the ice was slowly working its way towards shore, so I could not fish in the depths that I wanted to, and the only direction the ice was open would have taken me away from my launch area and I did not want to be stranded away from my truck. Have fun and stay safe everyone!
