Brian Buschini, Nebraska Punter, Switches Number to Brook Berringer's #18
In a touching display of respect and remembrance, Nebraska football player Brian Buschini announced he will be switch his jersey number to 18 in honor of former Husker quarterback, Brook Berringer. Berringer, who passed away in a tragic plane crash on April 18, 1996, was loved by Nebraska fans for his exceptional talent on the field and his unwavering faith off the field.
Buschini, inspired by Berringer's impact on the Nebraska football community, chose to pay tribute to his legacy by wearing the same number Berringer made famous during his time with the Huskers. "He was a fantastic player but was most importantly a follower of Jesus Christ! His story is special to me and I consider it an honor to wear his number!", said Buschini about Berringer.
An interesting coincidence lies in the dates surrounding Berringer's passing and Buschini's birth. Berringer died on April 18, 1996, while Buschini was born just a week later on April 25, 2001. It is almost as if Berringer's legacy and impact on the Nebraska football program were being passed down from one generation to the next.
The act of switching jersey numbers in honor of a fallen player is not uncommon in the world of football. In recent years, players across the country made similar gestures to pay homage to those who left an impact on their teams and communities. One notable example is former NFL player, Pat Tillman, who left a successful career in the NFL to serve his country and was later killed in combat. In his honor, several NFL players chose to switch their number to 40, the same number Tillman wore during his football career.
Tom Osborne, former head coach of the Nebraska football team, spoke highly of Berringer and his influence on the program. It is clear Osborne feels Brook was a young man of great character, a great competitor and a great teammat whose impact on the Nebraska football program will never be forgotten.
The switch of Brian Buschini's jersey number to 18 is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Brook Berringer. It serves as a reminder of the impact that Berringer had on the Nebraska football program and the unwavering faith and character that he brought to the field. The coincidence of Buschini's birth just a week after Berringer's passing adds an extra layer of significance to this tribute and solidifies the passing of Berringer's legacy from one generation to the next.
