Hij zorgde in 1993 voor opschudding door tijdens de eedaflegging van Albert II als koning “Vive la République d’Europe, vive Julien Lahaut” te roepen. Als miljardair werd hij in 1991 opgepakt wegens fiscale fraude. Zijn protestpartij R.O.S.S.E.M. scoorde toen hoog bij de parlementsverkiezingen.
