How to Save Your Green Beans for Later and Reuse Them as Compost

Green beans are a staple in many households and are a great source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. But what happens when you have leftover green beans that you don't know what to do with? Don't throw them away! Instead, you can save them for later use, grow more of them, or turn them into compost for your garden.

Saving Green Beans for Later

To save green beans for later use, you will need to blanch them first. Blanching helps to preserve the colour, flavour, and texture of the green beans. Here's how to do it:

Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil.

Add the green beans to the boiling water and cook for 3-5 minutes.

Drain the green beans and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water. This will stop the cooking process and prevent the green beans from becoming overcooked.

Once the green beans have cooled, drain them and transfer them to a plastic bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible from the bag before sealing it.

Store the bag in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Reusing Green Beans as Compost

Green beans, like other food waste, can be added to a compost bin to break down and become compost for your garden. Adding green beans to your compost will provide nitrogen to the compost, which is essential for the growth of plants.

Here's how to add green beans to your compost:

Chop the green beans into small pieces.

Add the chopped green beans to your compost bin.

Turn the compost regularly to ensure that the green beans break down evenly and quickly.

Wait until the green beans have broken down and become compost, which can take several weeks to several months.

Use the compost in your garden to provide nutrients to your plants and improve the soil.

Grow more

Split the beans and remove the little beans inside. Dry them for a few days on a newspaper or kitchen paper towel and re-grow them in your garden during season!

In conclusion, don't waste your green beans! By blanching and freezing them, you can save them for later use, or by adding them to your compost bin, you can turn them into valuable compost for your garden. By growing them you save money, no need to buy them again! Start saving and reusing your green beans today!
