The Wisdom and Discretion When Sharing Burdens

There is wisdom and discretion when sharing burdens. Let me explain by making two points.

One: If someone is hurting or offended about something, they should "lead others through their suffering," meaning they want to guard the hearts of those who listen to their burden. It's like the old illustration of sharing a prayer request, a covert way of gossiping.

When burden sharing, we want to consider those we're talking to, gauging their maturity to steward our burdens (which is a weight) that we're laying on them. They could take up an offense, get angry, gossip to others, or harbor an angry spirit toward the offending person.

Two: As you disciple others, you want to listen to how folks share their burdens. Are they conveying hope in Christ or the offense they feel toward the person who did something to them? Your role is not to condemn or critique them for mishandling how they shared the burden, but you must discern "their starting point." For example, if they don't have affection for the person who hurt them or if they are not ready to "love their enemy," as Christ appealed, you must know so you can care for them.

The point is that there is wisdom and discretion when sharing our burdens with others. We want to communicate well while listening well to those who share their burdens with us. The goal is to share burdens from a theocentric perspective; God is superintending over all things, even those things meant for evil, and we must speak as though we are experiencing God's leadership in our lives.
