A powerful earthquake has struck south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 1,700 people as they slept and trapping many others.
In the south-east of Turkey on the night of Monday, February 6, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 points occurred — the strongest in the country since 1939. Its epicenter was located near the large city of Gaziantep with a population of more than a million people. Tremors were also felt in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and on the border of Armenia and Georgia. As a result of the earthquake, more than a thousand people were killed and more than two thousand were injured. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed, including the Turkish fortress of Gaziantep, built during the Roman Empire
