The U.S. northeast just had an arctic blast that brought temps to -47F with windchill at -110F. It was so cold that water inside trees froze and split the trees. Another cold weather phenomena was frostquakes - an earthquake like event but due to sudden cracks in frozen soil or underground water when it is very cold. The arctic temps also created sea smoke, which is a fog that occurs in frigid air.
